Getting organised

- Keep all of your therapy sheets in a folder, perhaps loaded from the back to the front so that the most recent sheets that you are working on are at the top. Put sounds or words that your child struggles with or has only just touched on in the folder, but in a separate section that can be brought out ‘just for trying’ as needed. Always good to be hopeful!

- Try working in short bursts, where you can just be with your child without any distractions. Get someone else to occupy any siblings, turn your mobile onto silent and turn the TV off. It can often help if your child actually initiates the activity - so be ready to drop everything on a whim! It might be that your child suggests a certain book or game, or speech therapy cards, or a certain sound to concentrate on. Make it something enjoyable, and remember to stop when they look like they’ve had enough.

- If you are reading with your child, remember to sit on their right-hand side so that if you are following the words with your finger at the same time, you are drawing their eyes across the page from left to right, and not covering up the words yet to come on the page.
